Many people choose birthstone jewelry as a gift because it is meaningful and personal. Some even believe that wearing your birthstone can bring you good luck and health.

Giving birthstone jewelry as a birthday gift makes the most sense, but birthstone jewelry also makes a great anniversary, graduation, or holiday gift. Birthstone necklaces are an ideal present for those who believe that birthstones possess healing qualities because wearing your birthstone close to your heart is thought to strengthen its powers. Birthstone rings and bracelets are also popular choices.

History of Birthstones

For centuries, people have adorned themselves with jewelry, not only for its beauty but also because of its significance. Civilizations throughout history believed that gemstones possessed special powers and attributes.

The origin of birthstones is not perfectly clear, but we do know that birthstones have their roots in ancient astrology. Ancient astrologers assigned specific gemstones to the twelve signs of the zodiac. Over time, birthstones have come to be associated with calendar months. Birthstones were also used in ancient Tibetan and Indian cultures.

Some scholars believe that the tradition of birthstones stems from the Bible. In the Old Testament, there was mention of a religious garment called the Breastplate of Aaron, which was said to have twelve gemstones embedded in it. Each stone represented one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Modern List of Birthstones

Modern birthstones date back to a list that was assembled in 1912 by the American National Association of Jewelers (Jewelers of America) in an attempt to standardize birthstones. Although the list has historical merit, some substitutions were made based on the availability of certain gemstones. Below is a list of modern birthstones that also includes some information about the qualities of each stone.
