If you’ve purchased or have been gifted a beautiful piece of jewelry, you’ll want it to look brand new at all times. Unfortunately, regular wear or improper storage can cause your jewels to look dirty, tarnished, or a little lackluster.
Fortunately, we have a number of quick and easy ways to keep your jewelry looking its best at all times. Here they are:
Use Mild Dish Soap
Dish soap isn’t just good for dishes – it’s also good for cleaning your jewelry. Dish soap can help remove the dirt and oils that get stuck on your jewelry from frequent handling.
Simply fill a bowl with warm water, add in a few drops of dish soap, and place your jewelry in the bowl.
Let it sit for 20-30 minutes, then scrub it gently with a soft brush – like a toothbrush. Once you’ve gotten a nice lather, rinse it under warm water (be sure to plug the drain!). If your ring is still a little dirty, repeat the process again. If it’s clean, place it on a soft, lint-free cloth to dry.
Use a Cleaner Specifically Designed for the Metal
There are a number of store bought jewelry cleaners out on the market, and they’re good for cleaning specific metal types. Just be sure to read the label thoroughly, because some cleaners aren’t suitable for certain types of stones. If your cleaner is safe for your entire piece of jewelry, simply follow the instructions on the packaging.
Try Some Home ‘Remedies’
Most of us have dish soap at home, but if you’d rather use a different cleaning method there are a few other ways using things you’ll have right in your cabinets.
If you have Alka Seltzer, drop a tablet in a glass of water. Put your piece of jewelry in for a few minutes, rinse, and allow to air dry. You can receive similar results with denture tabs as well.
If you don’t have Alka Seltzer or denture tabs on hand, break out the club soda. Pour a glass and let your jewelry sit in it for a few hours – overnight even. Rinse it thoroughly and allow to dry.
What NOT to Use
After seeing so many common household goods you can use to clean your jewelry, you may be tempted to experiment with some more. NEVER use harsh household cleaners like bleach, and stay away from abrasive cleaners like toothpaste and baking soda, as they can harm or scratch the metal of your jewelry.
The absolute safest and most effective way to clean your jewelry is to bring it into a jeweler, like IMG Jewelers. Bring your piece of jewelry to us and we’ll be happy to return it to you, sparkling like new.
