Planning a Valentine’s Day Proposal (Tips for the Groom)

square diamond engagement ring with halo

Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to propose. Approximately 10% of annual wedding proposals take place on Valentine’s Day. You’ll probably spend the day with your significant other anyway, so it’s the perfect time to pop the question. But since you’ll be one of many who propose to their girlfriends that day and she will likely repeat the proposal story over and over again for the rest of your lives, it’s important to plan a proposal that stands out. Here are some ideas for planning a memorable Valentine’s Day proposal.

Candy Coat It

Use candy to make a trail from the door to the kitchen table, couch, bedroom, or wherever you want to leave the engagement ring. You could also buy your sweetheart a box of chocolates and replace one with the engagement ring. Another option would be to buy conversation hearts and set the ones aside that say, “Marry me.” While you’re sharing the conversation hearts, hand her a “Marry Me” heart, tell her that it’s perfect for her, and quickly get down on knee.

Write Her a Poem

Take the time to write a poem for her about your feelings, inside jokes, and the memories you’ve shared. The poem might not roll off of your tongue like Shakespeare, but the effort will be much appreciated. Conclude the poem with a proposal.

Plan a Surprise Party

Plan a surprise engagement party with close friends and family present and propose to her there. If she’s the outgoing type, she will love sharing such a special moment with all of the people she cares about.

Propose in Front of a Crowd

If she’s not shy and you’re pretty sure she’s going to say yes, propose to her in front of a crowd, such as at a movie theater, sports game, play, or restaurant. You can describe your plans to the venue in advance to see if they can help you plan something memorable.

Make It Glow in the Dark

Use glow-in-the-dark paper to cut out letters that spell, “Will you marry me?” and paste them on the bedroom ceiling. Surround the letters with glow-in-the-dark stars. Once you turn the lights out and lie down at bedtime, she’ll see the proposal when she looks up at the ceiling. You can put the ring right under her pillow.

Take a Walk

Take a walk in a beautiful park and talk to her about how much she means to you during your stroll. When you reach a scenic spot where it feels right, get down on one knee and propose.

Put the Ring Somewhere Unexpected

Are you the opposite of romantic? She might get suspicious if you take her to a fancy restaurant or do something else out of the ordinary. Alternatively, treat Valentine’s Day like any other day and put the ring somewhere she doesn’t expect to find it, such as in a silverware drawer, egg carton, or butter dish. Make sure you’re around when she discovers the ring, so you can immediately pop the question.
